The Knight of Cups, from Wikipedia:

If the card is upright, it represents change and new excitements, particularly of a romantic nature. It can mean invitations, opportunities, and offers. The Knight of Cups is a person who is a bringer of ideas, opportunities and offers. He is constantly bored, and in constant need of stimulation, but also artistic and refined. He represents a person who is amiable, intelligent, and full of high principles, but a dreamer who can be easily persuaded or discouraged. Reversed, the card represents unreliability and recklessness. It indicates fraud, false promises and trickery. It represents a person who has trouble discerning when and where the truth ends and lies begin.

So here it is everyone, the Steve Martin monologue that was a tribute to Gilda Radner. She had died that afternoon, the same day as the season finale. While Steve is presenting the “Dancing in the Dark” sketch (from the Steve Martin/Blues Brothers episode) he’s trying to hold back tears. This was just an unforgettable SNL moment that crushes your heart when you watch it.

I’m bringing this back because today is May 20th. On this day 24 years ago, we lost Gilda Radner.

Sorry, apparently I can only express myself through 80s love ballads these days.

You guys.

The fact that this recap exists at all is entirely due to a handful of wonderful ladies who talked me down from my ledge the night Secret in the Siege aired. (Or, joined me on the ledge with a flask and some choice words.) Had I not talked through this stuff back then, I wouldn’t have ever bothered rewatching the episode, let alone writing a rather lengthy recap on it. (You girls know who you are, and thank you, times a million.)

It started off being a small endeavour, because there are certain things I just couldn’t bring myself to write about (See: anything having to do with Pelant). But as these things go, the parts I did want to write about, I wrote about A LOT, and this monstrosity was born. (So: it’s not short. Not two-posts-long like last year’s finale’s was, but not quick, either.)

So, whatever it is, this is it. The last recap of a super-sized season, with super-sized emotions, apparently. My thoughts are still messy, and I know I’ll eventually have more to say, but this is not the time for that.

(Also, this is up today as a special birthday present to luppiters, so go wish her a happy birthday and thank her for being born, or else you wouldn’t have seen this, or something.)

It’s time for the marriage dance, y’all.

I feel like I can’t really respond to this correctly because I only watched the episode once, and don’t remember a lot of it. But I will respond to your recap. Because I can read your recap many times.

Whoa, <strike>Pelant</strike> Sours has moved into some gothic digs. Crime-doing pays well. (I still bet he’s snagged the Hodgins estate, mark my words.) He’s all alone without anyone to play chess with, BECAUSE HE IS A CREEPY FUCK.

I still don’t understand how that shenanigan actually worked. Like, there are loopholes, and then there’s a guy who hacks into a US military drone to force another guy to give him all his money. If he did actually take over the Hodgins mansion, that would just suck so much for Hodgins and Angela. I mean, really. Drive past your old house that’s now being inhabited by the guy who blackmailed you or whatever. I wouldn’t put it past this show, however.

Yeah, I don’t even care about his Stalker Board anymore, except that thanks to those production stills and screencaps, we’re to assume this has been going on since at least 2010?

I noticed a lot of Season Six “surveillance” photos on there. Apparently he got as swept up in the Hannah-Booth-Brennan love triangle as the rest of us. (Maybe that’s what turned him into an anti-shipper?)

But: yes, Booth can tell when she’s lying. (And she can tell when he’s lying.) This will serve you well in the future. Or drive you to the bottle. Either way, it’s important.

I’d break out the Sobbing Jess from “New Girl” .gif for this recap, but I’m pretty sure I would use up all of Tumblr’s bandwidth (or however that works).

Yeah, I totally thought about the Fra-gee-lay lamp when Booth pulled out Kalo the Hula Goddess from her crate. Booth turning into Darren McGavin makes a certain kind of sense. They share Grumpy Lumpkins qualities.

OH MY GOD. OH MY GOD YES. You, my friend, are a genius.

“Don’t look at her like that! K, you can have my jerky, but you’re not getting Kalo.” I admit, this line made me laugh more than it should have. It was so perfectly childish and Boothy. (I keep hearing the line in a Scottish accent, though.)

For some reason that reminds me of that whole “I’ll say sorry but I’m not taking off my glasses” meme from years and years ago (am I the only one who remembers Corey, the Boy Who Partied Too Hardy?) Which only makes it funnier to me. I am a fan of that line, in any case.

I LOVE that Booth sees right through it, too, and that he isn’t insecure in the least about it. He knows how she is and why she is the way she is. Which is why he can tease her about catching the bouquet at his mom’s wedding so nonchalantly. (Also: HEE I love you, Show, for bringing that up, because there’s no way in hell Seeley Booth lets that one slide and doesn’t comment about that for weeks after the fact.)

Yessss. He probably brings it up before they go to bed at night. “Hey, Bones?” “Yes, Booth?” “Remember that time we were at my mom’s wedding reception and you caught the bouquet?” “Shut up, Booth.”

As an aside, I know I’ve repeatedly mentioned in these recaps that one of the wonderful benefits of the past two seasons has been seeing Brennan flourish at home, where she can be herself without the squinty facade, but another bonus is seeing Booth so at ease, as well. We get to witness him being a giant goofball, like walking around with a lampshade on his head (or covered in campaign buttons) just to get a rise out of his partner, whereas he maintains his gruff, serious exterior with everyone else. They’re just so happy. Sigh.

Yes, this, exactly. I think one of the reasons his grumpiness on the job has been so noticeable this past season is that we do get to see him be either a huge goofball or just completely relaxed at home, with Brennan. And it might sound of mean, that I kind of like that he’s all business while at work, because it really emphasizes how happy he is in his personal life. Like you said, he can finally exhale at home, and be himself, with the people he loves. Aw.

Aw, poor Booth, the victim is his former partner — only I could have sworn Booth said at some point he never partnered up before Brennan, but that must be a lie, because there was that old guy who had it in for Brennan and her sexual skills back in season 2 or 3. (Parallel to the first victim in Past in the Present being Brennan’s friend and former colleague?)

I guess that maybe when he was a rookie agent, he had a partner (or two), someone to sort of show him the ropes. And then through one way or another he (or the Bureau) realized that he worked best when he was on his own. Although I do believe he did say that he’d never worked with anyone before Brennan (maybe in the 100th episode?). But I’m willing to excuse that as Show Revisionism.

Oh look, it’s a new-to-us agent who is on first-name basis with Booth! Presumably this eager beaver is filling Flynn’s shoes, given that the last time we saw him he was imitating a colander. (I know the real reason is because Reed Diamond was unavailable and they had to rewrite his role for this episode.) Is Flynn even alive anymore?

Lol, they never explained that, did they? Oh, Show.

Look: at this point, whenever Pelant calls Booth, I want him to speak in a terrible English accent, twirl a handlebar moustache, pet a hairless cat on his lap and wear a monocle. That’s what he amounts to, now. The end.

Yes. Dear god, yes. This is the truest truth that ever truthed. (I don’t even want to discuss him at length, because I’ll just get pissed off.)

Sidebar: one of my complaints about this episode is that Booth’s involvement in the Crystal Creek ambush was barely touched upon. To me, that would have been such an interesting story, because we know so little about Booth’s past, but his connection in this episode was tangential at best. It’s my fault for reading the previews, since they made it seem like the Crystal Creek affair was the main plot of the episode, yet it ended up being a red herring more than anything, at least as it pertained to Booth. Oh well.

Right? They missed a great opportunity there. Sigh. This episode was… a train wreck, I’m sorry. Not even David Boreanaz’s directing could save it.

I’m sorry, I can’t take Booth’s undercover scene seriously.

Because.

MACGRUBER!!!

Booth just needed a mullet, and he’d be set.

It’s the vest, man. The vest killed me.

Is that truck the redneck Crystal Creek survivor shows up in the same truck Brennan was driving in the Indonesian jungle in the season 6 premiere?

I think Hart Hanson mentioned that it was his Jeep, so yes? (I don’t remember what the car in this episode looked like, but I vaguely remember Hart tweeting about it.)

The slow-mo fight for the gun made me laugh a lot. It seemed like a cheesy action movie (or, say, MacGruber), instead of Bones.

Slo-mo is just…it’s super hard to use without it seeming corny, and “Bones” rarely does it well. I love the show, but they have to stop using the slo-mo. (And it’s not even that they use it often, but they rarely use it well.)

Sigh. This next scene in the park, though.

No lie, as soon as I read this sentence, the Lumineers’ “Ho Hey” came on my iTunes. I audibly gasped.

I do remember that the proposal was perfect. Just…if the episode had ended fifteen minutes too short, right after that scene, I would have been okay with that. Her explanation for proposing (and her explanation to Angela and Cam) was just perfect, and very her. Ugh. I mean, beef jerky, man. This fucking show.

Seriously, dude: just chill out, listen to some Taylor Swift, and eat a couple of pints of Haagen-Dazs. There are more fish in the sea. Some who may share your predilection towards evildoing. The jig is up, man.

Didn’t the guy on “Castle” propose to his chick? Can’t Sours go break that shit up?

Sigh, again. The scene where Brennan tells Cam and Angela about proposing to Booth also gave me Feelings. So many Feelings, in fact, that I had to write a separate essay about it the other night. Short version: it was my favourite scene of the episode, probably of the season, and definitely one of my favourite scenes in the entire series. It embodied Brennan’s journey throughout the past eight seasons. (Much like the proposal itself did, as well.) It was beautiful.

I was secretly hoping that Brennan would stress the anthropological aspect of marriage when explaining why she asked Booth to marry her, and I fucking loved when she said something to the point of wanting it to be known to history, that they were husband and wife, or whatever. Because that was perfect to me. (I’m realizing that I felt several things were perfect in this episode, right before it all went to shit.)

“She did it with jerky! […] Beef jerky! Come on, who does that? She’s amazing!” Oh my God, Booth is a thirteen year old girl and it is beautiful to see. HE IS SO HAPPY. We so rarely see Booth so unabashedly gleeful (especially when not inebriated), so it’s a treat to witness. You can tell how much he absolutely loves and adores Brennan and appreciates everything about her and loves her for it. Sigh. Babies. Both of them.

[Insert Sobbing Jess .gif here.]

This girl looks like she’s 12. How does she have such a nice apartment? (Filed under “How do people increasingly younger than me have their shit together except they’re psycho killers so maybe not so much.”)

Question of my life.

(I really, really wished he’d said “That is not her father!” Maury-style, though.)

Oh my god. Another opportunity wasted.

You know what the magicky magic computer is decoding? ALWAYS DRINK YOUR OVALTINE.

Two Christmas Story references in one recap! Good show, old sport.

“Listen, I hate to cut short a meeting with my sixth and eighth favourite people, but I have a date with my first favourite.” OH MYLANTA I LOVE THIS. First, because Booth is so fucking happy he’s not even pretending to be a grump and is spreading the joy around. Second, because SEELEY BOOTH RANKS HIS FAVOURITE PEOPLE. That is hilarious and sweet all at once. Third, because BRENNAN IS HIS FAVOURITE PERSON Y’ALL. He’s so stupid in love it’s unreal. I love seeing Goofy!Booth.

I loved that. Although now I want to know the rest of his list (Brennan’s first, obviously, Christine and Parker take the second and third spots interchangeably, I’m guessing. Fourth and fifth—Pops and…the guy who invented hockey? Is Caroline sixth, or eighth? I MUST KNOW.)

(Also, I don’t have a problem with his kids not being first on his list. He loves his kids like whoa, no one should doubt that. But his Bones is his Bones. Full stop.)

I see it exactly like how she agreed to have Christine baptized last season. To Booth, it’s eternal salvation for Christine’s soul; to her, it’s just a ceremony where Christine wears a pretty dress and gets water sprinkled on her head — in other words, harmless and of no consequence to her. It was harmless to the baby, but meant a great deal to Booth, so she had no problem rolling with it. The fact that she went one step further and said that while she doesn’t share his beliefs, she sees the beauty in the tradition of the Catholic ceremony, blew me away. I love that Brennan — the one whose roots are in anthropology and who can understand religion and traditions from an intellectual perspective, without belittling them.

That’s how I see it as well.

OK, maybe I can. It’s so cartoonish to me. I have no problem with him making threats against Booth, but the way it was done here just felt off, to me. I guess I’m in the minority that would have preferred he’d outright threatened Booth’s family to this veiled “I can kill these five random people in the park and yes Innie is now fully aware these four strangers were merely metaphors for anybody in the world just like the people Pelant surveilled at the second crime scene were and he didn’t mean these specific four people” stuff. I sort of get where they’re coming from with this — that Pelant is forcing Booth to sacrifice his own happiness to save innocents, just like Pelant has forced every character he’s targeted to make choices as he predicts their behaviour (did they drop that plot of his from last year’s finale?). I’m on board with that. It’s just the execution that left a lot to be desired, for me. Instead, it just feels like Pelant has a ginormous crush on Booth, and is in the “if I can’t have you no one can” mindset, and is making Booth relive some Days or our Lives plots he missed while he was in jail or something.

See, the problem I have with the metaphor thing—that is, why I find it no more excusable than the four extras thing—is that people are always going to be in danger. Sours is going to keep killing people no matter what, because he’s a sick fuck and that’s what he does. It’s just—the whole thing pissed me off to no end, and I still just can’t with this ending, man. Suffice to say that I agree with what you wrote.

I won’t even write about the last scene, because I just can’t. Just reading about it makes me shake my head and roll my eyes. Nope. Can’t do it. The whole thing was pointless and…but no, no, I won’t discuss it, I’m stopping now.

Your recap was the highlight of the episode, for me at least. So that’s nice.
